Our History
COATL was born from heritage, history, and change. Our brand draws inspiration from our Mexican roots and from the civilizations and traditions that shaped Mexico long before us. At the center of that inspiration are the Mexica, more commonly known today as the Aztecs, who established Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco, in what is now Mexico City.
The imagery of the moon holds a special place in our identity. It connects us to the history, mythology, and symbolism of ancient Mexico while representing cycles, change, and the passage from one stage of life into another.
Our name, COATL, comes from the Nahuatl word cōātl, meaning “serpent.” The serpent is a powerful image throughout Mesoamerican culture and appears prominently in the name Quetzalcōātl the Feathered Serpent, one of the most significant deities in Mesoamerican tradition but also represents something deeply personal change and rebirth.A serpent must shed its old skin in order to continue growing. COATL carries that idea forward as a philosophy for life to leave behind the person you once were, embrace change, and continually work toward becoming someone greater.
